Beneath the waters of Storm Bay, lutruwita/ Tasmania, lies a concrete cylinder chained to the ocean floor, its purpose initially unknown. Installed thirteen years ago as an experimental data storage facility, the structure is now a quiet titan of submerged technology, ostensibly designed to prolong data integrity and ensure sovereignty over its stored data. It has come to light that the facility, known informally as SUH, intercepts and archives sonic transmissions from across the globe.
Through an intricate web of clandestine protocols, the data center captures fragments of audio from streaming platforms, cloud storage services, Bluetooth transfers, and even transient signals traveling between personal devices. Unlike the mainstream algorithms that prioritise profitability and trends, SUH has no metric for popularity or commercial value. It is a digital siphon for the unplayed, the obscure, the forgottenโrecordings never downloaded, demo tracks traded in secrecy, and sonic traces lost in the margins of digital space.
Although, the data centerโs vast storage systems have not remained entirely secure. Over time, fragments of its vast, covert archive have been leaked and transmitted by a mysterious broadcast known as SUH Radio. Operating with no identifiable schedule or source, the broadcasts unveil snippets of unclaimed recordings and decrypted files into a collision of genre-deifying and obscure mixes. Powered only by a vision to permeate alternate acoustic narratives from the depths of the digital abyss.
SUH Radio brings its transmission to the shore with a fortnightly Monday night programming series to local haven for sound, coffee and conversation, Somewhere Coffee Bar. Featuring guest DJs, each episode uncovers hidden fragments from the SUH data facility, untangling alternate acoustical narratives and synthesised dreams. Tune in Monday.
